TenaControls offers an excellent light system for the 12 inch C57D Space Cruiser from Forbidden Planet.  This lighting system is designed for the Round2/Polar Lights (#POL895/12) 1/144 scale model kit, about 12 inches across.

This smaller version LED engine simulator incorporating Smooth Linear Drive turning on two LED’s, every 90 degrees of rotation.  

This product can fit into the engine base and give that illusion, the only thing you have to do is paint the panels for a nice diffused effect.
